From NEW YORK TIMES and USATODAY Bestselling author Nicole Williams . . .

Knox Jagger. The name inspires resentment in every male at Sinclair University, want in every female, and contempt in Charlie Chase.

Charlie can be summed up in three words independent, independent, and independent. To Charlie, Knox epitomizes everything that’s wrong with college males prolific one-night stands, drunken senseless fights, and a body that hints at prioritizing gym time over study time.

As an up-and-coming writer for Sinclair University’s newspaper, Charlie’s tasked with getting to the bottom of who’s been dropping little white pills into girls’ drinks at parties. In an ocean of All-American boys sporting polo shirts and innocent smiles, Knox is the obvious suspect. As evidence piles up against the bad boy of Sinclair, Charlie becomes more and more certain it isn’t Knox. But when her drink is dosed at a party and she wakes up on Knox’s couch the next morning, Charlie’s left with more questions than answers when it comes to Knox Jagger.

How can Charlie ever hope to uncover the truth behind a guy so closed off he’s become . . .

Hard Knox.

***Hard Knox is the first book in The Outsider Chronicles, although each book that follows will highlight different couples and can be read as a stand alone.***

I wanted to like this book much more than I did. Ended up speed reading the back of the book.

I am admittedly probably extra harsh on this book because I am usually highly selective of the books for which I spend more than just a couple dollars. But I thought, hey, I'll give a new author a shot since a lot of her books are highly reviewed. After reading Hard Knox, I will definitely not be paying full price to read anymore of her books.

I liked the overall arc of the story, and the writing really was fine, but I did feel their was a lot of unnecessary exposition and just general interior monologue-ing (especially during conversations). This is the main reason I ended up speed reading most of the second half. I did get back into it when it was FINALLY revealed what the neck Knox' actual deal was. I wasn't disappointed with what his secret was (even though it was a bit predictable - but whatever, as long as it wasn't glaringly obvious I don't care if stuff in these books is somewhat predictable); but what did bother me about it was that, again, it came in long-winded paragraphs that felt more like expositional backstory than character revelation. I guess it's just a bit disappointing when a big reveal has to come with a long conversation. But okay, enough of the vague negativity from trying not to spoil anything.

I liked the character's archetypes, but there was some discord for me between that and who they actually seemed to be. I have a feeling a lot of the characters this author writes might feel like the same people, and unfortunately I didn't love them enough for that to be a draw book after book.

I hate saying I wish a book were shorter, but I really wish this book were thirty pages shorter - cut out some of the repetition, a lot of the expositional posturing, and just let the story breeeeath.

The cover is awesome, and honestly I'm sure I let my liking of it hook me more than I should have, so I guess kudos to the marketing team behind this book. Basically, don't judge this book by it's cover... or maybe, don't let it fool you.

Even though this review came out fairly negative, obviously I liked the book enough to still give it a few stars. And even though this isn't exactly a glowing comment, it should mean something to those of you out there like me that read a lot and stumble through a fair amount of books trying to find the next great one: This book is not as bad as a lot of the crap out there.

Hard Knox The Outsider Chronicles edition by Nicole Williams Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This book…. This book is everything I love about New Adult and really spotlights the great things about the genre. It has a girl growing and learning that she doesn’t always know what’s best and a guy who hasn’t had it easy but still learns to come though and be a better person. It takes stereotypes and smacks them in the face. It is along the same lines of Easy by Tammara Webber and not in the “OMG this book is just a copy” way but in the “wow these both have similar themes and are awesome” way.

Charlie Chase is an independent, determined college student who is aspiring to be a groundbreaking journalist and all things show that she will get there one day. She is tenacious and doesn’t get caught up in the partying and craziness that can come along with college, actually she kind of looks down on it. Charlie is quick to judge and she does fall prey to stereotypes, but she is also willing to acknowledge that she does this and when she is wrong. I loved how strong Charlie was. When it becomes apparent someone is targeting her, she doesn’t cower but fights back. She is determined to figure out who it is and she doesn’t let fear stop her.

Along the way to help her is Knox Jagger. Knox at first look is the kind of guy who you should run away from screaming. He is the epitome of bad boy, but as usual, appearances aren’t everything and rumors are usually just that rumors. There is a lot more to Knox than what the stereotypes and rumors would have you believe. Knox has not had an easy upbringing and he has made mistakes, but everything that has happened has made him the man he is today and that man is a great person.

Knox and Charlie together make a great pair. Things with them are not easy and they argue a lot, but it’s worth it. They are both fiercely independent and don’t need anyone else, but together they are stronger somehow and can be independent together… if that makes sense. Both are witty and sarcastic and that always makes for great dialogue and their dialogue was awesome.

I really liked that along with the relationship between Knox and Charlie, the story is also about discovering who has been slipping roofies into girls drinks and then who is targeting Charlie. I’m not going to lie, I did correctly peg who it was but I think that’s because I read a lot. I still enjoyed trying to piece it together to see if I was right. I also liked that the book showed that this does happen on college campuses and that you do need to be careful and that just because a guy seems nice, doesn’t mean he actually is. Also, I need to take a second to discuss Charlie’s professor because I hated her. She was so unprofessional and horrible that I don’t even have words.

Hard Knox is a great read and one I highly encourage New Adult fans to read. It is everything good about the genre and isn’t just a carbon copy of all the other ones out there right now. It has all the New Adult elements but is still its own engaging read. Nicole Williams has done it again and this is the reason she is an auto buy author for me.
